I've been eyeing this book ever since I saw the blurb on Aardvark Book Club. I decided to make it my October 2025 pick, and I am so glad I did. The story is set in a retirement home where the residents start dropping like flies. While most people think it's just the norm for a place like that, our main character, Rose, isn't buying it. With the help of three other residents—Miller, Gopi, and Mickey—they dive into solving these mysterious "murders." "The Autumn Spring Retirement Home Massacre" is a horror novel by Philip Fracassi, published in September 2025.
A Cozy Retirement Community with a Twist
So, here’s the scoop: this story unfolds in a retirement home that’s pretty much a cozy little community. The residents love it because they get 24-hour medical care for any emergencies, a lively activity center, and a bunch of clubs and activities to keep things fun. Everyone has their own personal living apartments, plus there’s a cafeteria serving up meals and some lovely landscaped grounds perfect for strolls and socializing. But things take a turn when the first resident unexpectedly dies in what’s labeled an "accident." Our main character, Rose, starts to get a little suspicious—she can’t shake the feeling that her friend’s injuries from a fall just don’t add up. As more residents start to pass away, the atmosphere shifts from cozy to a bit creepy, and folks begin to worry about their own safety. That’s when Rose, along with her three pals—Miller, a retired college professor; Gopi, a retired film director; and Mickey, a retired football player who’s still got some serious strength—decide to jump into action and investigate the mystery. It’s a fun mix of friendship and intrigue as they try to uncover what’s really going on in their beloved community!
I totally love the storyline of this book! It's set in a retirement home, which is such a cool twist, and our main characters are older folks who turn into these awesome investigators. The story really digs into the challenges that older people face, especially how society often underestimates them just because of their age or physical limitations. But our characters show that they’ve got tons of strength and bravery, all thanks to the life experience and wisdom they've gathered over the years. Plus, we meet some characters from different backgrounds, each with their own stories and struggles, who tackle their fears and the issues happening in their home.
The writing and pacing are super easy to get into, which kept me hooked and on the edge of my seat. I found myself wanting to dive back into the story again and again!
Book Comparison: A Casual Take

So, I couldn't help but think of "The Thursday Murder Club" by Richard Osman when diving into "The Autumn Springs," mainly because of the setting and plot. But honestly, that's where the similarities pretty much stop!
The vibe of the two books is pretty different. "The Thursday Murder Club" has this nice, laid-back pace, filled with lots of British witty dialogue. On the flip side, "The Autumn Springs" keeps things moving at a quicker pace, packed with action and some really lively characters.
I had a blast with both reads! If you're looking for a cozy whodunit, "The Thursday Murder Club" is your go-to. But if you're in the mood for something with a bit more of a thriller or horror edge, then "The Autumn Springs" is definitely the way to go.
Final Thoughts! 4.75⭐️
